Toby Comeau is a British pianist, composer and educator who has performed throughout the UK and Europe, and taught extensively in a one-to-one capacity and in workshops throughout the UK. His performances and compositions have been heard at Ronnie Scott's, Love Supreme Jazz Festival, Kraków Jazz Festival and on BBC Radio 3.
Born and raised in Cornwall, where he was a cathedral chorister, he went on to study at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester before graduating from Guildhall School of Music & Drama with first class honours in jazz piano.
Toby has accompanied musicians such as Liane Carroll, Mark Lockheart, Gareth Lockrane, Jason Singh and Newton Faulkner. He is a founding member of the award-winning band Bonsai, and has worked closely with Alex Bone with whom he wrote and performed a commissioned set for the 2017 Marsden Jazz Festival.
When he is not gigging or composing, Toby is a passionate teacher with a deep interest in how individuals thrive in different ways. He has taught students of all ages and abilities, including conservatoire graduates as well as young beginners. He currently teaches Derek Paravicini. Classically trained, he is able to teach all styles of piano to a high level as well as music theory, composition and arrangement, aural skills, rhythmic skills, improvisation and jazz tuition on any instrument, band tuition and Sibelius.
Toby is also in demand as a transcriber and arranger, providing accurate transcriptions at speed and arrangements that are musically well-informed, practical for the client's needs and visually attractive.
